About Founded by Dr. Ian D. Robinson in 1978, Photographic Consultants LLC has consulted to the imaging industry worldwide for 40 years. After earning a PhD in physical chemistry from Yale University in 1958, Dr. Robinson spent eight years at DuPont’s Photo Products Department. Employed as a research chemist, he worked on photographic emulsions, photographic gelatin and coating technology. From 1966 to 1978, he went on to direct studies on the photographic industry at Arthur D. Little, a management consulting company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Today, PCL is run by Dr. Robinson’s son Doug, who joined the company in 1986. Doug earned a masters degree in economics from Northeastern University in 1993, and has done studies on the imaging markets around the world for nearly thirty years. Having expanded on the foundation built by his father, Doug has become well known throughout the photo industry and has a long list of clients including the leading suppliers of photo papers and consumables, printing equipment, raw materials, and print services, among others.
Our work is usually carried out under multiple sponsorship. In addition to covering the U.S. photo market in detail, we also follow the global markets.
Our methodology is to interview knowledgeable industry management while making use of publicly available information, where we think it is reliable. After substantial analyses and cross-checks, the resulting market estimates, forecasts and assumptions are presented in an integrated fashion.
